When your business is in the Transition Zone you are the most vulnerable. Everything you have worked for could slide into extinction right in front of your eyes.
It almost happened to me. The dream you started with and the legacy you hoped for is still available.
Don't hesitate, you still have time to take action.
Recognizing these early indicators will give you some time to take action.
As you get close to the change breakpoint, #2, the pressure increases, and your work/life balance is tilted. Your stress becomes palpable. The market may be giving you an opportunity to serve them in a different way and your customers may start asking for something different. You may be experiencing some pricing pressure.
By the time you get to the invest breakpoint, #3, you will notice that the market has shifted, and your competitors are closing in. Sales growth of current offerings have flatlined and your marketing is anemic.
It has been said that the job of leaders is to discover today what matters tomorrow. Your work is to reinvent or transform your business by starting on the regeneration curve at the right time. Smart investments will jumpstart your business.

My bachelor’s degree in industrial & manufacturing engineering caught the attention of Arthur Andersen (became Andersen Consulting and then Accenture) where I spent over a decade helping clients with digital transformation. I rose through the ranks of software developer, to designer, architect to become a chief business strategist and leader of our mid-tier consulting practice in the Pacific Northwest. My territory included all except the 12 largest accounts in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Alaska.
During this phase I founded or co-funded 4 startups. We had 3 successful exits and one bankruptcy. I learned the most from the failure. It was an exciting time to ride the tech boom as a CEO and CTO. We worked in the areas of document automation and records management. We were early into cloud infrastructure and supporting remote workers. I really enjoyed running small businesses and learned a lot about all the executive functions and how to structure equity and get deals done.
I was at the right place at the right time when the federal rules of civil procedure allowed the direct introduction of electronic evidence. The Fortune 500 rapidly figured out that legacy documents were more harmful than beneficial. My reputation quickly grew to one that could advise both the CIO and General Counsel on how to safely preserve potential evidence and then dispose of unnecessary documents.
During this time, I was a Managing Director at Huron Legal (HURN), a publicly traded consultancy. Then was recruited by IBM to oversee North America Software Sales for their Legal Software Portfolio where I held a monstrous quota and had 250+ sales reps on my team The only negative was that I racked up 2 million airline miles.
Somehow, I qualified for early retirement from IBM and took the package. My desire was to take all I learned about business, sales, leadership, and human behavior and bring it back to small businesses. My goal is to help entrepreneurs realize their dreams. While I completed a few small consulting assignments my business model was to take on longer term fractional roles as companies expanded. I held interim roles of COO, VP of Sales, CTO, and CFO. I helped 3 visionaries found their businesses, invested in them, and serve on their boards.
While I still consult, my driving motivation is to make a difference in the world. This ranges from helping to unlock the potential in people through executive coaching to serving nonprofit organizations. There were countless people who took an interest in me during my first forty years in business and I want to be more intentional about paying that generosity forward for another decade. Let me know how we can make a difference together.
